Farm
Bureau Awards Community Grants
Posted 20 November 2008
The holiday season arrived early
for three community organizations in northeast Iowa who received
Community Enhancement Grants from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation
(IFBF). IFBF gave Allamakee Community Schools, Traer Fire Department
and Elkader Fitness Cooperative a total of $4,500.
• Allamakee Community Schools received $300 to purchase two automated
external defibrillators (AEDs) to be placed in the gym and auditorium
and CPR training materials.
• Traer Fire Department was awarded $1,200 to purchase rescue equipment
for fire fighting, forcible entry, transportation accidents, farm
accidents, building collapses and other incidents.
• Elkader Fitness Cooperative accepted $3,000 to purchase computer and
software equipment, furniture, a security system and equipment for the
aerobic area.
The former Turkey River Athletic Club was devastated by this year’s
flooding, and the owner decided to close the business. Now the fitness
center is back on its feet, after a group of local residents and
businesses chipped in with donations and volunteer work and
restructured the center as a nonprofit cooperative. With the help of
county and state Farm Bureau grants, the facility re-opened on Nov. 1.
“We are incredibly grateful to all of our donors and supporters,
especially to Iowa Farm Bureau,” said Amy Holst, president of Elkader
Fitness Cooperative. “Our goal was to restore a health and fitness
center for Elkader residents to use before winter set in. Without the
grant dollars like we received from Iowa Farm Bureau this simply would
not have been possible.”
