Jury
To Decide Iowa Turkey Lawsuit Outcome
Posted 17 November 2008
A lawsuit over a fire that
destroyed the Iowa Turkey Products plant in Postville in 2003 went for
decision last week to a federal jury in Davenport.
The company's insurance carrier, Regent Insurance Company sued two
companies hired to clean the plant, Packers Sanitation Services Inc.
and National Service Company of Iowa Inc.
The jury heard closing arguments on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Regent claims cleaning crews failed to shut down and lock out
electrical and hydraulic power before starting their work, and the
failure caused the fire.
Packers and National Service denied they did anything wrong and denied
they were behind the fire on Dec. 20, 2003.
The plant, which employed 350 people, was never rebuilt and the company
was sold.
Packers Sanitation Services and National Service Company, two
maintenance companies, have been cleared of blame for a fire that
destroyed the Iowa Turkey Products Plant in Postville nearly five years
ago.
A federal jury made its decision over the weekend.
Iowa Turkey Products' insurance company claimed cleaning crews from the
companies failed to shut down and lock out electrical and hydraulic
power before starting their work, and that their error caused the fire.
