NICC
Online Programs Earn Accreditation
Posted 17 November 2008
The Higher Learning Commission
(HLC) awarded accreditation to Northeast Iowa Community College's
online degree programs this month after a review of the college's
online instruction capabilities, educational opportunities for online
students and the quality of the online programs. The commission's
approval of NICC's seven programs also allows NICC to develop new
online programs without a special accreditation process.
NICC's online programs include a general Associate in Arts
degree that transfers to other four-year colleges, and Associate in
Arts degrees in business administration and criminal justice. Other
online programs are agriculture business, business specialist, health
information technology and medical transcriptionist.
Earning a college degree online expands career options for students.
For example, NICC's Calmar campus has strong agriculture degree
programs in dairy science, pre-veterinary medicine, agricultural
technology and agriculture business. With the development of an online
program in agriculture business, students who live hours away from the
Calmar campus will now have the opportunity to receive this agriculture
business degree.
The college also ensures that online classes reflect the
opportunities afforded to students in the traditional face-to-face
classroom setting, according to Curt Oldfield, NICC vice president of
academic affairs. "All NICC faculty who want to teach online or are
currently teaching online will take a Technology Teaching course. The
course is designed to standardize the experience for students. Course
content will be individualized to faculty, but the expectations of the
online course will be standardized," said Oldfield.
NICC's online programs appeal to busy people who benefit
from a more independent approach to learning, such as sharing written
work with peers and instructors over e-mail or posting on message
boards during the week as part of class discussions.
Online degrees increase flexibility for learners of all ages and
backgrounds, and completing course assignments in an online format
teaches students time management.
